The predecessor of today’s S.M.A.R.T. are the Predictive Failure Analysis (PFA) of IBM and Compaq’s IntelliSafe technology. S.M.A.R.T. is an evolved combination of these technologies and was first introduced by IBM in cooperation with several hard disk drive manufacturers (like Quantum, Seagate and Western Digital) in an effort to enhanced drive reliability. The idea of using standardized self-monitoring to predict failures before they happen was finally added to the ATA/ATAPI specifications and continuously enhanced by many hard disk drive manufacturers.
Generally, fatal hard disk drive failures can be classified in (a) failures due to general aging and hardware abrasions and (b) sudden failures because of extreme external incidence (as a fall of or very high environment temperature). Apart from the latter, between 60% and 70% of all sudden hard disk drive failures can be forecasted by S.M.A.R.T. technology nowadays if the S.M.A.R.T. status is appraised in regular intervals not larger than 3 hours.
